Hi everyone,
Happy Friday.  We have had a wonderful and HOT week here in third grade.  In case you were wondering, our classroom gets very hot in the afternoons.  We are looking at a week of temps in the 80s next week.  Please have your kids dress in layers!

Heat aside, it has been such a great week full of learning and fun.  We have been getting to know each other with our This is Me and What I Believe presentations and our student presenters have been amazing so far.  Thank you all for helping your student prepare for this unit.

Next week we have 4 presenters.  We will not be presenting on Friday due to our field trip:

Monday  9/25 - Cayden
Tuesday 9/26 - Cali
Wednesday 9/27 - Parthavi
Thursday 9/28 - Harlan

Here is a peek into our presentations so far:

Next Friday is our Field trip to Osmore Pond.  If you are joining us, please know that we are leaving school by bus at 8:45.  We will return to school at 1:45.  We are really excited about this community building experience.

Our Open House is on Thursday, September 28.  I know your students are really looking forward to sharing what they have been doing and learning so far in 3rd grade!  I look forward to seeing you there.

That's all for now.  Have a wonderful weekend.  Stay cool!!

Monday, September 11

Hi all,
Happy Monday and welcome to our first full week of third grade. We have been having a wonderful time getting to know each other these past few weeks and will continue to do so.

We have just begun to dig into our first big unit called THIS IS ME AND WHAT I BELIEVE! I hope you have been able to take some time to read some of the information that has been coming home.  This oral presentation unit is a great way for us to learn about each other, practice speaking in front of groups and it also has a writing component where we are reviewing the expectations of writing a paragraph.

This week we begin our first student presentations.  Presentations are at 12:30 unless otherwise noted. Here is the schedule for the week:

9/12 (Tomorrow!) - Asa
9/13 - Emma (this presentation will take place at 9:00 in the morning and NOT in the afternoon.
9/14 - Moses
9/15 - Maya

Please remember when it is your child's turn, to send the bag back with them so that the next student can take it home!  You are welcome to join us for your child's presentation if you are able.

We had our first ECO Learning Adventure today.  It was great fun!  Ken taught us the 3 CARES of ECO; Care for yourself, Care for each other and Care for the earth.  And then we did some exploration of Sabine's Pasture.

PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME TO DO A TICK CHECK THIS EVENING!!  We did walk through tall grass.

I am looking forward to a wonderful week!  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Student Presentation  Series
Parent/Student Information Letter

What Is This?
Beginning next week, students will take turns doing an oral presentation, called,
“This Is Me and What I Believe.”  Each day, a new student will present.  Students will be signing up, in class, for a day to present and they will know in advance so that they can prepare for their presentation.

What Are The Expectations?
I expect students to talk about and present as part of their presentation:
·         3 people in their life that are important to them and why
·         3 talents, skills, or interests  (DEMONSTRATIONS and EXAMPLES welcome!)
·         3 hopes or goals for their future (one of them must be a hope for this school year)
·         3 things they BELIEVE will make the world a better place

These presentations are intended to inform us about one another (community building), consider what we hope for, and think about our own beliefs.  They will also allow students to practice essential literacy skills, like speaking, listening and writing.  This work will connect to our narrative non-fiction reading unit about important people in our world that will begin in September.

Then What?
After each presentation, students will reflect on what they heard by doing some writing and drawing based on the presentation.  They will strengthen writing skills by writing a paragraph about each person in their class, based on the presentations.  Their work will be collected in their spiral bound presentation book.

Here are a few examples of things students might say for their presentation (but not limited to these):
Important people:  grandparents, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, parents, siblings, etc. AND WHY!
Talents, Interests, Skills:  music/instrument, singing, gymnastics, sports, art, skateboarding, physical talents, books, collections, animals, writing, art, computers, etc.
DEMONSTRATIONS are encouraged!
Hopes/Goals for the future:  learn multiplication facts, read a chapter book, become a doctor, go to college, play high school baseball, travel the world, etc.
Things they BELIEVE will make the world a better place: I do not want to give kids examples, so as not to put words in their mouth.

Students are encouraged to bring things in that represent the topics they will talk about.
Pictures/Videos can be emailed to my account if that is a preferable method of sharing photos/videos.  They can be projected onto the large classroom screen!

If you have any questions about these presentations, please call or email.
Feel free to attend your child’s presentation.  Typically, they will begin at 12:30.
The schedule for WHEN students will present will go out next week.

First day photos

A quick glimpse into our first day. It was busy and fun. I bet your third grader is tired. I know I am!
